Housing Update:
I went through Scott and Lelana Leigh’s house. 9 bedrooms, 2 floors, NICE! Not too fancy, large communal spaces.
Was contacted about another house and apartment. It is actually AJ and Shannon &Pastor Al and Donna’s house.
Barry also mentioned the log structure on front street is for sale. . .near Fairbanks Drama Association. We toyed with the idea about that location being a hostel.

We have been welcomed in to visit Scott and Lelania’s House SUNDAY the 13th – 4:00 p.m. I will provide addresses and directions this week.
I went ahead and cancelled the house walk through. I will reschedule.
Marylee,
I’ll be out of town from 2/23 to 2/29, but after that, I’m open to making a visit with you if none of the other board members can go before that.
Regarding Safe Shelter: I can’t help but share what is happening in Fairbanks right now regarding this conversation. It is a topic for all the service providers. But also, there is favor right now with the city & Borough.
Project Safety Net (sometimes also called Project Safe Place) is trying to help facilitate this. It is a small grant from the Alaska Mental Health Trust fund, to help facilitate a way for young people who are in an emergency – to get help fast (mediation, safe shelter, counseling) It is a collaboration between the 24 hr. Care Line Crisis Intervention line, Joel’s Place (wrote the grant and is providing the AmeriCorps Vista who is working on it) IAC (the women’s shelter) PHH (Presb. Hosp. House who agreed to provide 2 beds) FCA’s S.O.A.P program & even Public Health has gotten involved as well as one of the cab services. This week the Borough Transportation Dept. agreed that all buses would become mobile safe places, if a youth was in trouble. This is a huge break through. However, during the holidays, there were 5 emergency calls from youth needing alternative housing. The 2 beds promised by PHH were full due to the holidays! The youth had no where to go.
Children’s Services will do nothing with these youth and neither will the police – they are 13 and older and not perceived to be in “imminent danger of losing life” because they can escape the situation. This is incredulous.
Community members are asking questions. I got this email yesterday from Dawn Sadler (same local business family) : “I am currently on the board of Joel’s Place and invested in seeing Project Safe Place be successful in Fairbanks for the homeless/ at risk youth. It is imperative that there be a shelter of some sort to provide respite in the case of a youth being identified or coming forward. I would be interested in discussing the situation. I will be back in town the first week of March, perhaps we could have a cup of coffee.”
This is a topic of conversation everywhere I go. Not a day seems to go by that it doesn’t come up. I believe we are in a position to fill a gap. I sense an urgency, but also an open heaven – if you will. It is good that everyone is talking about it. . . this gives us an opportunity to walk through open doors and make ourselves known.

Have you checked out the place, i.e., inside?
Patrick, I have not gone into either place.
I will contact both of these parties and take a look gladly, but would like 1 other board member to come too.
Let me know.
Just in case not everyone signed up for comments or saw the post Marylee made on the Foraker article. It is worth a read and here is a link to my comment.

It is good to explore options. For me it is a way of learning what the possibilities are – as well as what the options are. Each house sets a different set of standards and offers a variety of + and -. The more we look, the more we learn. I’ve never seen this house, though I know Donna and her family. What I like right now about this house, is that she is looking to sell it “before next year.” How often do you get an opportunity to work out the details like that?

Marylee, it seems your thoughts are still brewing on this subject. I used to live in taku sub years ago. It’s a good location.

Well I suppose it is worth taking a look. But it seems a little like putting the horse before the cart until we have a couple more board members in place.

Barry,
I agree that some degree of solidification of the board would be a good precursor to decision making. Meanwhile, idea exploring can continue.

Another house: If you know Scott and Lelaina Leigh. . . .they are praying about selling their house: This house is on 15 acres, near Hagelbarger, one 1800 sq ft. apartment and one 4000 sq. ft. house rolled up all in one + 3 car garage, and 9 bedrooms.
