- We use email or our board website for most of our business. Will accessibility or technological ability be a problem for you?
Not at all.
- Have you read and can you agree with the Bylaws as written? as well as our Board Member Responsibilities, Code of Ethics, and Job Descriptions?
Yes, I have read and can agree.
- Why are you interested in serving on the board of Fairbanks Youth Advocates?
Young people are growing up in a world that is vastly more complicated and treacherous than what I grew up in. I was fortunate to have parents that helped me to navigate my adolescence. Unfortunately, some young people don’t have the same support. I would like to provide support to the organization in Fairbanks that is providing and meeting the basic needs of a vulnerable population, in the hopes of having an impact on their lives so that they can reach their fullest potential.
Furthermore, professionally I work for an organization that serves a population that most want to conveniently forget about due to the severity of their illness. It is my belief that the clients that I serve would be much better off if there had been some form of early intervention. I believe that FYA can provide the compassion and demonstrate the love of Jesus Christ that will change the trajectory of a young persons life and I am excited to be considered.
- What is your professional experience with leadership and/or your accomplishments in
business, government, philanthropy, or the nonprofit sector:
In my first career I was a project manager and was responsible for prime contracts worth more than $75 million. I lead several teams during my career, the largest numbering 6 team members.
- Briefly outline your volunteer service for other organizations:
In the past I have served as a small group leader and demonstrated leadership abilities that afforded me the opportunity to become a shepherd coach and senior shepherd coach. As a shepherd coach I was directly responsible for providing support, guidance, and leadership to 10 small group leaders, and as a senior shepherd coach I was responsible for 8 – 10 shepherd coaches and assisting with developing strategic goals for those under my care.
As an undergraduate I served the collegiate chapter of my fraternity as the secretary.
- What are some specific skills and strengths that you can bring to the Board:
I believe that I have the gift of looking for the exception or flaws of proposals or ideas. I look for ways to make improvements and fine tune ideas so that the highest quality product is delivered.
I also have a person centered approach which affords me the opportunity to be a vocal advocate for those that I love and serve, both personally and professionally.
Furthermore, in my Proffesional role, I have worked with difficult youth and developed a rapport with them. Ultimately, this rapport allowed me to better understand their needs and help me to collaborate with them to find ways to appropriately have their needs met. If i am approved to participate as a board member I plan to use this skill to work directly with the youth and help them to become advocates for their needs and the needs of their peers.

Mark has the leadership background and also the experience of working with challenging youth. He expresses a passion for directly helping youth. Seeing “the big picture” could help in a variety of aspects (goal setting, fund raising, for a few) I wonder if he has techy- website skills too? 😉
