We’re Having a Contest!
April 2, 2012Community Development Block Grant
April 13, 2012April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month.
This is an issue that speaks to our hearts. Runaway and homeless youth are significantly more likely than their peers to have experienced sexual abuse in their homes, and to experience further abuse and exploitation on the streets. Runaway, throwaway and homeless teens are often coerced to trade sex for shelter and food.
At least a third of runaway teens are coming from homes in which they’ve experienced sexual abuse.
At least a third of runaway teens are targeted for sexual exploitation within 48hrs of leaving home.
95% of teenage “prostitutes” have come from houses in which they experienced sexual abuse.
Children who are sexually abused are four times more likely to become victims of sexual exploitation.
Unfortunately, this is an issue that disproportionately effects Alaskans. For nearly 20 years, Alaska has led the nation in prevalence of sexual abuse and assault – at nearly three times the national average. A 2008 study released by the University of Alaska concluded that the average age of the victim was 16. The average age of the perpetrator was 29. 89% of the victims were women – though, statistically, men and boys are far less likely to report abuse.
This is saddening, horrifying, heartbreaking, but the survivors are courageous and strong. Our hearts go out to them. For April and every other month, we will continue to raise awareness about sexual assault.
For more information on Sexual Abuse and Assault and to join the discussion about healthy relationships, check out Sexual Assault Awareness Month.
In Fairbanks, Stevie’s Place provides support for young victims and their families. The Interior Alaska Center for Non-Violent Living provides support for survivors of all ages.
For more information on Sexual Trafficking and the Sexual Exploitation of Children, we encourage you to join us at Noel Wien Library on April 30th, at 7pm. We will be hosting a special presenter, Dolly Caswell, who will share more about Commercial Sexual Exploitation and its prevalence and effect on and in Alaska.
