February 13, 2015Setting up house and finding your own apartment is a lot of work. With a support system in place – it’s easier and even fun. We recently had the privilege of watching one of our youth go through this very experience with the support of a new family.
Rachel,18, grew up in a town outside of Fairbanks, but circumstances brought her to The Door last summer. Rachel shared, “Knowing that I’m turning 19 has been really stressful…” Youth age out of our services when they turn 19. Despite her stresses, we see a motivated young woman; one who sets goals and goes after them. “Since being here, I’ve got a job and I’m close to graduation. And I have a new family.” She smiles as she refers to a family that has been a critical part of her safety net since just before coming to The Door.
“Not every family is a good one, but that doesn’t make you a bad person. It doesn’t mean your life has to be terrible.” With the support of her new family, she is getting situated in her own apartment. She is excited to have her own place and is hopeful for her future. We are hopeful for her too! Wishing her continued success in all her future endeavors – and keep in touch girl!
