The following is an email from Deidre, and Patrick suggested sharing this with all:<\/p>\n

Recently FYA put together a Statement of Functional Expenses (SFE) for 2016 at the request of our CPA, Brad Johnston.\u00a0 The SFE measures a non profit’s efficiency and is part of the IRS Form 990 annual tax return for non profits.\u00a0 It is also common for donors and grantors to study the SFE of non profits before making financial contributions to determine how efficiently they operate.<\/div>\n

This statement divides FYA’s \u00a0expenses into three main categories:<\/div>\n
    \n
  • Program service expenses (expenses directly related to operating a shelter)<\/li>\n
  • Management\/administrative expenses<\/li>\n
  • Fundraising expenses<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
    \n

    The underlying idea of the SFE is that an efficient non profit is one that minimizes its cost of fund raising and administration.<\/p>\n

    So how did FYA measure up for 2016?<\/p>\n

    1. \u00a0 Program expense percentage.\u00a0 How much do we spend on the programs and services we exist to provide?\u00a0 FYA had 84% which is considered stellar.\u00a0 This means that 84% of money that FYA spent was directly spent on operating The Door.<\/p>\n

    2.\u00a0 Administrative expense percentage.\u00a0 FYA had 11%.\u00a0 Less than 15% is stellar, so we are doing great on this metric.<\/p>\n

    3.\u00a0 Fundraising expense ratio.\u00a0 Less than 10% is stellar, so we are doing great at 5%.<\/p>\n

    PS \u00a0 You might want to consider publishing these metrics in the newsletter.\u00a0 Your donors will be glad to see how efficient FYA is.\u00a0 These metrics are worthy of bragging.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
