{"id":3297,"date":"2016-02-22T12:01:40","date_gmt":"2016-02-22T21:01:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.fairbanksyouthadvocates.org\/board\/?p=3297"},"modified":"2016-02-27T09:19:46","modified_gmt":"2016-02-27T18:19:46","slug":"draft-minutes-board-meeting-2-18-16","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/fairbanksyouthadvocates.org\/board\/2016\/02\/22\/draft-minutes-board-meeting-2-18-16\/","title":{"rendered":"Draft Minutes Board Meeting 2-18-16"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Fairbanks Youth Advocates Board Meeting<br \/>\n<\/strong>February 18, 2016<br \/>\n5:00-7:00<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Roll Call\n<ol>\n<li>Call to order: 5:07<\/li>\n<li>Present: Patrick Endres, Liz Fabian, Barb Tyndall, Chick Wallace, Tami Manning (phoned in)<\/li>\n<li>Absent: Sarah Finnell, Dave Miller<\/li>\n<li>Staff: Marylee Bates<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<li>Open in Prayer:\n<ol>\n<li>Barb Tyndall opened in prayer.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<li>Mission Review:\n<ol>\n<li>Board members watched a short video State of Alaska budget presented by Gunnar Knapp from UAF.\u00a0 Because oil revenues are down and declining Alaska has a $3.6 billion deficit.<\/li>\n<li>Mr. Knapp said we have four options: cut spending, cut dividends, increase revenues, or save less.<\/li>\n<li>Looked at graph of 501 nonprofits in state of Alaska.\u00a0 Human services takes up 34% of the budget.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<li>Accept Minutes from January 2016 Meeting\n<ol>\n<li>Minutes:\u00a0 Liz moved to accept January meeting minutes; Patrick seconded.\u00a0 Approved unanimously.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<li>Signature items\n<ol>\n<li>Patrick signed time sheets<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<li>ED Report\n<ol>\n<li>Marylee gave the board a review of our clients in 2015:\n<ol>\n<li>The Door housed 37 males and 28 females.<\/li>\n<li>Race breakdown and residence prior to entry is available<\/li>\n<li>Most come from home<\/li>\n<li>Destinations of where clients went after staying at The Door is also available<\/li>\n<li>Disabilities; mental illness, alcohol abuse, developmental, physical<\/li>\n<li>44 youth ages 13-17<\/li>\n<li>21 youth 18-24<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<li>Trends:\n<ol>\n<li>More than half stayed less than a week<\/li>\n<li>More than half returned home<\/li>\n<li>30% reported abuse<\/li>\n<li>20% had dropped out of school at time of intake<\/li>\n<li>35% report substance abuse, mental health issues, developmental<\/li>\n<li>greater majority are first time runaways<\/li>\n<li>Discussion of what happens to kids after they leave.\u00a0 Chick Wallace said we need to train them for life.\u00a0 Marylee replied that staff follow up in six months with kids.\u00a0 It is suggested that a monthly parents meeting would be helpful to discuss issues and address them positively.\u00a0 This could be used to give parents strategies for parenting which would benefit families.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<li>Personnel:\n<ol>\n<li>14 staff associated with shelter,<\/li>\n<li>Numerous volunteers, 4 interns,<\/li>\n<li>One VISTA is starting March 1\u2014needs a\u00a0computer costing more than $1000.<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Liz moved and Patrick seconded a motion to give Marylee Bates permission to purchase a computer over $1000. Approved unanimously.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<li>Summer Vista Idea:\n<ol>\n<li>Ideas include; outside activities for youth to participate; accompany youth to these planned activities; organizing, planning, planting and harvesting garden with youth; participating in our street outreach program.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<li>Staff changes:\n<ol>\n<li>Janelle submitted resignation \u00a0in mid-January.<\/li>\n<li>Hired Kellie Boyle (former ED of Joel\u2019s Place) to take Janelle\u2019s place.\u00a0 She is an effective leader.\u00a0 Could potentially could become a part-time Shelter Manager.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<li>ED activities and staff training:\n<ol>\n<li>Marylee has new grandbaby on the way and will be taking time off in March to help with kids.<\/li>\n<li>Marylee and staff are now focused now on the reports (licensing, etc.).<\/li>\n<li>VISTA orientation will occupy her for off and on for a few weeks.<\/li>\n<li>Staff meetings and trainings are going well.\u00a0 They have good attendance, and the team is growing closer.\u00a0\u00a0 On March 9-10, Covenant House Alaska (CHA) trainers (Trauma Informed Care, Culture of Care, &amp; Motivational Interviewing) will be presenting.<\/li>\n<li>Sarah recently participated in Outreach Training at CHA, &amp; Laquawna visited with HR and youth services at CHA today!\u00a0 During spring break Marylee would like to send Hannah and Kelli to CHA too.<\/li>\n<li>The VISTA\u2014will visit My House in Wasilla, Gathering Grounds Caf\u00e9, and Steam Driven Boutique, to gather ideas.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<li>Current Events:\n<ol>\n<li>National School Lunch Program:\u00a0 Turned in 100 page document in response to corrective Action required based on December review.\u00a0 We get about $8500 per year for this<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<li>Wellness Policy\u2014Board must review, approve and make it public.\u00a0 Board reviewed and discussed this document.\n<ol>\n<li>The guidelines focus on encouraging healthy lifestyles; including habits of healthy eating, good hygiene, and healthy lifestyles including physical activity.<\/li>\n<li>Patrick said these should all be worded positively.\u00a0 The board spent time reading and editing the Wellness Policy<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Patrick moved to accept the Wellness Policy of the Fairbanks Youth Advocates as edited by the board; Chick Wallace seconded.\u00a0 Approved unanimously.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<li>Discussion about upcoming evals\n<ol>\n<li>Will look at evaluation tools in the future in order to complete these in March.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<li>Financial Report\n<ol>\n<li>Treasurer\u2019s Report.\u00a0 Liz Fabian reported that W-2 and 1099os were distributed on time at the end of January to all employees.\u00a0 Report is on line.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<li>Vista Position\n<ol>\n<li>VISTA:\u00a0 Goal of VISTA Project: Youth-centric campus in Fairbanks.\u00a0 There are future plans to develop our properties to create a safe place for youth.\u00a0 Some ideas include, a clothing store, caf\u00e9 to employ youth and job training for youth.<\/li>\n<li>Conversation about VISTA proposal.\n<ol>\n<li>Three year project and\u00a0our VISTA, Christina Cortez, agrees to one year at a time.<\/li>\n<li>Patrick said he would be intimidated by this proposal. \u00a0The scope of this plan would not be given to a person who is not going to be around throughout.<\/li>\n<li>This project needs heavy lifting by our Executive Director and Dave Miller and others who know what needs to be done and how to do it.\u00a0 Marylee said the VISTA will do the leg-work but this will be directed by ED and others.\u00a0 It\u2019s free full time help.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<li>Public Information Report\n<ol>\n<li>Website:<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>Patrick said he thought we needed to go to a professional to develop our website.\u00a0 A recent over-ride took away much of our website.\u00a0 Patrick had to redo it.\u00a0 Thinks we need to trim it down and hire professionals to make it better.\u00a0 Patrick does not currently have the time to do it as he would like to see it done.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<li>Vision Forward:\n<ol>\n<li>We have to have more kids.\u00a0 Like to see our bed at 65%.<\/li>\n<li>This year: Emphasis on Outreach.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<li>Schedule Next Meeting\n<ol>\n<li>Tuesday, March 29, 5:00.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<li>Meeting adjourned 6:57<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Respectfully submitted:<\/p>\n<p>Barbara Tyndall, FYA Secretary<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Fairbanks Youth Advocates Board Meeting February 18, 2016 5:00-7:00 Roll Call Call to order: 5:07 Present: Patrick Endres, Liz Fabian, Barb Tyndall, Chick Wallace, Tami Manning (phoned in) Absent: Sarah Finnell, Dave Miller Staff: Marylee Bates Open in Prayer: Barb Tyndall opened in prayer.
