{"id":3103,"date":"2015-09-02T12:00:49","date_gmt":"2015-09-02T20:00:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.fairbanksyouthadvocates.org\/board\/?p=3103"},"modified":"2018-02-12T07:01:45","modified_gmt":"2018-02-12T16:01:45","slug":"september-draft-minutes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/fairbanksyouthadvocates.org\/board\/2015\/09\/02\/september-draft-minutes\/","title":{"rendered":"September 1, 2015 Board meeting minutes"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Fairbanks Youth Advocates Board Meeting<\/p>\n<p>September 1, 2015<\/p>\n<p><strong>Call to Order<\/strong>: 5:05<\/p>\n<p><strong>Present:<\/strong> Sarah Finnell, Dave Miller, Meryem Kugzruk, Tami Manning, Barb Tyndall, Nikki, Crenshaw (staff), Liz Fabian, Marylee Bates<\/p>\n<p><strong>Absent<\/strong>:\u00a0 Patrick Endres, Chick Wallace<\/p>\n<p><strong>Open in Prayer<\/strong>:\u00a0 Meryem Kugzruk opened in prayer.<\/p>\n<p>Nikki Crenshaw was introduced by Marylee Bates.\u00a0 Nikki is a senior at UAF majoring in psychology and justice.\u00a0 She is getting a Master\u2019s degree in counseling.\u00a0 She does social media for FYA and is getting Facebook and Twitter up to speed.\u00a0 She has a goal of getting 1000 on our Facebook page and the numbers are in the 900s now.\u00a0 Working on communication with other non- profits.\u00a0 Meryem asked what we would do with U-Tube.\u00a0 Nikki said we could advertise events and raise awareness. She said her heart is focused on at-risk youth.<\/p>\n<p><strong>*Minutes<\/strong>:\u00a0 Sarah Finnell moved, Tami Manning seconded to approve the minutes.\u00a0 Approved unanimously.<\/p>\n<p><strong>*Voting Issues<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<p>Barb Tyndall called the references for Dee Antesberger and met with her on Sunday.\u00a0 She will invite Dee to the next board meeting\u00a0so the\u00a0members\u00a0can meet her.<\/p>\n<p>Dean Gustafson has been on the board for some time but has not been at our meetings due to personal issues.<\/p>\n<p>Liz Fabian moved to remove Dean from FYA board; Barb \u00a0Tyndall \u00a0seconded.\u00a0 Approved unanimously.<\/p>\n<p><strong>ED Report:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Marylee Bates is back on the work schedule due to staff members leaving, some unexpectedly.\u00a0 One staff member was asked to leave.\u00a0 Hannah, Holly and Tim went on annual leave which was planned ahead. \u00a0\u00a0So, at one point, Nikki, Janelle and Marylee ran the shelter for 48 hours.<\/p>\n<p>Marylee has hired five new ladies.\u00a0 Three of them worked at the Denali Center together; Carolyn, Amanda, Enid and have come on staff part time.\u00a0 Amelia was a volunteer who was hired as staff.\u00a0 We have no house parent yet.\u00a0 Marylee said we could use one more person.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Community<\/strong>\u2014Marylee has attended the neighborhood safety watch.\u00a0 We have our own policeman we can call if needed.\u00a0 She also attended the FNSB meeting on marijuana to give input.\u00a0 She did eight shifts at the fair and attended the Chamber three times this month.\u00a0 She called them and asked for a bill because she had eaten there three or four times.\u00a0 They said they are covering her costs for now.<\/p>\n<p>Marylee\u00a0is giving\u00a0many tours of the shelter\u2014about two a week.\u00a0 They had one Congressional group traveling to Alaska to inspect various entities.<\/p>\n<p>The Door is housing as many as seven kids so far; it varies between five and seven.\u00a0 Janelle is working with families.\u00a0 They have had mediation with four families.\u00a0 Mike is billing us for mediation sessions at a $40 flat fee.\u00a0 There will be an evaluation session to assess the success of this service.<\/p>\n<p>The property on 137 8<sup>th<\/sup> Avenue has been torn down.\u00a0 The counseling building is almost ready.<\/p>\n<p>There are 144 collegiate athletes from the National Association of Christian Athletes coming to Alaska next summer.\u00a0 They are coming for a golf tournament but to do service projects as well.\u00a0\u00a0 They form groups of twelve to do community projects.\u00a0 Since we don\u2019t have big projects to do right now; we can send them to serve others in our name.\u00a0 They are coming next June but applications for projects need to go in now.<\/p>\n<p>Marylee will conduct Vista interviews tomorrow for our campus project.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Whoever is hired will come in November.<\/p>\n<p>HMIS\u2014Homeless Management Information System.\u00a0 This is a national program we are mandated to participate in.\u00a0 Management changed hands and now we have to do it more thoroughly.\u00a0 Marylee and staff spent eight hours being trained to put in data.\u00a0 They were given five test cases so far and this takes a lot of time and energy.\u00a0 The phone rings all day.\u00a0 So the plan is to use the counseling receptionist at Clearwater and have her answer FYA phones as well.<\/p>\n<p>Marylee and staff are reviewing and redrafting FYA financial policies.<\/p>\n<p>Marylee attended the chamber meeting where Pat Pitney, from OMB was the speaker. \u00a0She painted a bleak picture and said it is time to think lean and mean regarding the budget.\u00a0 Less money is coming to non-profits in the future.\u00a0 Marylee said we have been conservative but need to be more so in the future.<\/p>\n<p>Attendees were encouraged to go to Alaska.gov website to give feedback to legislators and to spread the word about the site.\u00a0 There is a 90 second video. Click on \u201cJoin the Conversation\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Financial Report<\/strong>: Treasurer\u2019s Report August 2015<\/p>\n<p>Liz Fabian discussed report for end of July.\u00a0 The report is available on-line.<\/p>\n<p>Discussion of buildings and their value.\u00a0 We were not exempted from paying taxes on the counseling building.\u00a0 The latest bid to tear down the white building is $28,000.\u00a0\u00a0 We will solicit other bids.<\/p>\n<p><strong>One Homeless night<\/strong>\u2014Meryem Kugzruk reported on the planning, work groups, and jobs accomplished.\u00a0 Marylee said response is low so far.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Green House renovation<\/strong>:\u00a0 Dave Miller said the green house is almost done.\u00a0 More money was procured at our last board meeting and it is probably going to cost about $42,000 when completed.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Schedule next meeting:<\/strong>\u00a0 September 29 from 5:00-7:00<\/p>\n<p><strong>Bio updates<\/strong>:\u00a0 Liz Fabian emailed hers this morning<\/p>\n<p><strong>New Business:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Dave Miller reported that a property we have wanted for our campus is for sale.\u00a0 The board needs to assess what we are doing as far as scaling back.\u00a0 Property could be over $200,000.\u00a0 Dave said it is part of our plan but we probably should not be buying right now.\u00a0 Liz asked if we could buy the property and rent it?\u00a0 Dave said we had determined as a board that we don\u2019t really want to be landlords but he could get the particulars and bring it to the board to make the decision.\u00a0 We could also turn it over to someone else to manage.\u00a0 Sarah said we should look at the price; what we could get for rent, and make that decision.\u00a0 Marylee said that we would have to pay taxes on it if we aren\u2019t using it for FYA and that no one really has the time to deal with it right now.\u00a0 The board agreed.\u00a0 Dave will tell the seller we are not interested at this time.<\/p>\n<p>Meryem Kugzruk attended the North Star Foundation and said that they want to help with One Homeless Night.\u00a0 They donated a credit card machine for the event.\u00a0 Their secretary wants to help with social media.\u00a0 They may have a training session for non-profits on social media.<\/p>\n<p>Another non-profit made hand-made books.\u00a0\u00a0 It was suggested that they might want to teach an art class to kids at the Door.<\/p>\n<p>The Winter Bear Project does plays on suicide prevention in the villages.\u00a0 Counselors come with them and talk to people in the community.\u00a0 September 11 is their dress rehearsal.<\/p>\n<p>Pass the Hat\u2014 will take place October through December to correspond to the end of the year giving.\u00a0 This is the West Valley challenge for a matching donation to what they raise.<\/p>\n<p>Members updated their contact information on the blog.<\/p>\n<p>Meeting adjourned 6:40<\/p>\n<p>Respectfully submitted: \u00a0Barbara Tyndall,\u00a0FYA secretary<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Fairbanks Youth Advocates Board Meeting September 1, 2015 Call to Order: 5:05 Present: Sarah Finnell, Dave Miller, Meryem Kugzruk, Tami Manning, Barb Tyndall, Nikki, Crenshaw (staff), Liz Fabian, Marylee Bates Absent:\u00a0 Patrick Endres, Chick Wallace Open in Prayer:\u00a0 Meryem Kugzruk opened in prayer.
