{"id":2831,"date":"2015-02-20T11:49:06","date_gmt":"2015-02-20T20:49:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.fairbanksyouthadvocates.org\/board\/?p=2831"},"modified":"2015-04-02T14:59:06","modified_gmt":"2015-04-02T22:59:06","slug":"draft-minutes-fya-board-meeting-2-18-15","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/fairbanksyouthadvocates.org\/board\/2015\/02\/20\/draft-minutes-fya-board-meeting-2-18-15\/","title":{"rendered":"Minutes FYA Board Meeting 2-18-15"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Fairbanks Youth Advocates Board Meeting<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>2-18-2015<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Call to order:<\/strong> 5:02<\/p>\n<p><strong>Roll Call:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Present:<\/strong>\u00a0 Patrick Endres, Sarah Finnell, Kathy Birch, Barb Tyndall, Meryem Kugzruk, Brad Johnston, Dave Miller, Tami Manning, Chick Wallace, Marylee Bates, Rodney Gaskins, Dean \u00a0Gustafson<\/p>\n<p><strong>Open in Prayer:<\/strong> Kathy Birch opened in prayer.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Welcome and Introduce Dean Gustafson: <\/strong>\u00a0Board introduced themselves.\u00a0 Asked to explain what drew him to FYA.\u00a0 Graduated in 06.\u00a0 Was at risk and needed some help.\u00a0 Joined Marines at 18.\u00a0 Now working on Masters in public health.\u00a0 Grew up in Fairbanks.\u00a0 Discovered FYA by word of mouth.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Welcome to Chick Wallace<\/strong> as newest member of board.<\/p>\n<p><strong>BHAP<\/strong>\u2014Rodney Gaskins reported on Juneau trip.\u00a0 State Coalition for homelessness asked him to go and discuss this grant.\u00a0 He made appointments with all eight legislators. Saw Steve Thompson, chair of Finance Committee, who was very concerned and said he would work to get the funding restored.\u00a0 An unknown lady came up to Rodney at the Capital and said, \u201cGod\u2019s favor over you at the Rescue Mission\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rodney explained that this funding should be put into the Operations Budget though it is safer in Capital Budget. \u00a0\u00a0Tammy Wilson, Pete Kelly and others were all working for it.\u00a0 Rodney had Communion at Kelly\u2019s office.<\/p>\n<p>Governor\u2019s aide was not positive.\u00a0 Went to Governor\u2019s office and met Jim Whitaker who greeted him warmly and was sympathetic to the situation.\u00a0 He said Governor was working on it.\u00a0 Rodney reported that Fairbanks has favor and is in a good position.\u00a0 Rodney is writing thank you notes to everyone who helped.\u00a0 FYA will also write some.<\/p>\n<p>Marylee reiterated that this is a wake-up call.\u00a0 We need to keep working to become non grant dependent.\u00a0 7.7 of 8 million restored.\u00a0 5% change in funding for FYA<\/p>\n<p><strong>Mission Review:<\/strong>\u00a0 Board looked at long-term and short-term goals.\u00a0 Still need to broaden our donor base.\u00a0 FYA is on target for most of the goals.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Unfinished Business:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>Update from Dave Miller: \u00a0Dave reported that it is up to us to make an offer and we should be ready to do that soon.\u00a0 He should have solid plan by next meeting.\u00a0 He needs to follow up with Dave Hayden to design a campus.\u00a0 Chick Wallace suggested we also tap into Merle Jantz as a resource for this.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Executive Director Report:<\/strong> Marylee Bates\u2014A success story of girl who contacted her from another city.\u00a0 She has been at The Door since last July.\u00a0 She is a model resident and graduates this spring.\u00a0 She was adopted by a family that took her to Disney Land.\u00a0 She moved out three weeks ago and the family paid first and last month\u2019s rent. She has a job. Marylee asked her what people need to know about homeless youth. Her answer:\u00a0 \u201cNot every family is a good one, but that doesn\u2019t make you a bad person.\u00a0 It doesn\u2019t mean your life has to be terrible.\u201d\u00a0 She came around a few times because she was lonely.\u00a0 She is coming less; has found her way.\u00a0 Good outcome.<\/p>\n<p>Rodney commented that isolation is not good; people would rather be with bad people than be alone.\u00a0 Even getting a pet helps.\u00a0 Follow up with the homeless is critical.<\/p>\n<p>Meryem suggested the board give this girl a housewarming gift.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>2014 year in review<\/strong>: Shared the numbers and demographics of The Door with the board.\u00a0 These numbers will be in the next newsletter.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Sheltering<\/strong>: Two shift leaders went to Covenant House for training. Very excited about what they learned.\u00a0 Niki is leaving the end of June.\u00a0 Have some time to find a replacement.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Donors<\/strong>: Looked at demographics of donor giving from individuals, organizations, businesses, and churches. Tiles for donors was discussed.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>Discussion:\u00a0 <\/strong>Dean Gustafson as potential new board member.\u00a0 (Dean left at this time; Patrick said he will follow up with him).\u00a0 Rodney said that Dean\u2019s past experience as a homeless youth is very beneficial when applying for grants.\u00a0 We need someone in leadership who has this experience.\u00a0 Dave spoke in favor of him.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Board voted unanimously to accept Dean Gustafson as a board member of Fairbanks Youth Advocates.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Financial Report:\u00a0 <\/strong>Brad Johnston printed a summary of the Treasurer\u2019s Report.\u00a0 He reported that we are on track.\u00a0 In 2014 we did well and beat our budget.\u00a0 The Board reviewed the balance sheets.\u00a0 This report is available on-line.\u00a0 We owe the City of Fairbanks a financial statement.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Pick, Click, Give:\u00a0 <\/strong>Audit requirement if over $500,000 operating budget.\u00a0 Audit may cost $10,000 or more.\u00a0 We do not have this service due to the audit requirement.\u00a0 Brad said we do not exceed that.\u00a0 To apply for next year, we need to apply before March 31, 2015.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Marylee\u2019s Evaluation:\u00a0 <\/strong>Needs to be done by April.\u00a0 Patrick has changed some of the questions.\u00a0 Board needs to review questions to see if they are adequate now that The Door is operational. \u00a0Rodney exhorted the board to challenge Marylee and set real goals for her to attain to.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Annual Board Evaluations:\u00a0 <\/strong>Patrick will send out board evaluations to members to complete.
