{"id":2652,"date":"2014-09-16T18:19:59","date_gmt":"2014-09-17T02:19:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.fairbanksyouthadvocates.org\/board\/?p=2652"},"modified":"2014-12-15T08:54:11","modified_gmt":"2014-12-15T17:54:11","slug":"draft-board-minutes-9-9-14","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/fairbanksyouthadvocates.org\/board\/2014\/09\/16\/draft-board-minutes-9-9-14\/","title":{"rendered":"Board Minutes 9-9-14"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Fairbanks Youth Advocates Board Meeting<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">September 9, 2014<\/p>\n<p><strong>Call to Order<\/strong>: 5:05<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Present<\/strong>:\u00a0 Patrick Endres, Kathleen Birch, Sarah Finnell, Barbara Tyndall, Brad Johnston Meryem Kugzruk, Marylee Bates, Dave Miller<\/p>\n<p><strong>Absent:<\/strong>\u00a0 Tami Manning<\/p>\n<p><strong>Open in Prayer<\/strong>:\u00a0 Barb Tyndall opened in prayer.\u00a0 Dennis and Tami Manning were remembered in prayer as Dennis is battling cancer.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Approve Minutes<\/strong>: <strong>(MSP, Patrick Endres, Kathy\u00a0 Birch to accept August minutes)<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Patrick \u00a0Endres gave a brief demonstration of how to add a new post to our website and get it into the proper file.<\/li>\n<li>Brad Johnston asked to table his training piece until next meeting.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Executive Director\u2019s Report<\/strong>:\u00a0 Marylee began her report with the story of an 18- year-old who had lost way and his bearings.\u00a0 He was in and out of the shelter and would come back to eat occasionally.\u00a0 The week before school started he had a talk with James, our house parent.\u00a0 He has since moved in with the family of a good friend, has a room of his own, and is in school.\u00a0 His scores are high and the recruiters are after him for military service.\u00a0 It is a happy ending to a story which was initially very frustrating for staff.\n<ol>\n<li>The Door is holding at five kids nightly.\u00a0 They had a youth from Mentasta (female) who is in OCS\u2019s care now.<\/li>\n<li>A youth was recently\u00a0diagnosed with mono by the nurse from Tanana Clinic. \u00a0He is in a room by himself.\u00a0 The staff is taking extra precautions to assure that it is not passed on to others.\u00a0 He has to stay for three or four weeks in quarantine.<\/li>\n<li>All the\u00a0youth are enrolled in school.<\/li>\n<li>There has been an increase in volunteer interest with nine new applicants.\u00a0 The Door currently has three interns and two additional interns are interested in serving.<\/li>\n<li>Marylee has signed on two new staff to work weekend hours since these are most difficult to staff.<\/li>\n<li>The application for the National School Lunch Program, which provides reimbursement for meals, has been completed.\u00a0 This allows The Door to submit for reimbursement for breakfasts and weekend lunches.<\/li>\n<li>New donors continue to emerge:\u00a0 \u00a0Fairbanks Rotary Club donated $700; Alyeska donated $1000; Alaska Gravel contributed $600 earned from a bake sale; The Golden Heart Rotary golf tournament raised $6000; Kroeger Foundation gave $529; \u00a0and Cleaning services were recently donated by Michael Bonilla of Clean Pro to clean the furniture at The Door.<\/li>\n<li>The stolen vehicle was found.\u00a0 The back window was broken out.\u00a0 We are going to give the car to Thomas to do with what he wants, since theft was on his property.<\/li>\n<li>The plan to give memberships to staff for\u00a0Planet Fitness is being utilized.<\/li>\n<li>There is an open dinner every Saturday night at The Door which has replaced the weekly barbeque.\u00a0 Former clients often stop by for this.<\/li>\n<li>A public health nurse is coming weekly.<\/li>\n<li>A week from today Marylee will be on vacation for two weeks.<\/li>\n<li>Sarah recommended the book, <em>How to Talk So Teens Will Listen, and Listen So Teens Will Talk<\/em><\/li>\n<li>Patrick asked Marylee how we are doing overall as a homeless shelter.\u00a0 Marylee said we are about a seven on a scale of ten.\u00a0 We aren\u2019t there yet but we are getting to where we need to be.\u00a0 Working with kids is difficult.\u00a0\u00a0 The shelter has gained new positive energy with two new interns and new staff.\u00a0 Marylee said they had ten or twelve visitors today bringing things.\u00a0 The community is engaged in this project and we are moving forward.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Building Acquisition<\/strong>-Marylee reported that on September 23, the court will decide whether the plan for the estate money to come to FYA is approved.\u00a0 October 10, was the date that was set to acquire the property.\u00a0 Marylee will be gone after Oct 1 and Patrick will be gone Oct 2-24.\u00a0 Dave said it won\u2019t happen that quickly. He suggested that if we are confident this deal will go through, we need an approval from the board to free up money to extend the offer or make that happen. Brad suggested we offer a substantial amount (such as $2,500) to extend our offer up to 60 days.\n<ol>\n<li><strong>(MSP &gt; Brad Johnston, Patrick Endres &gt; to authorize expenditure of up to $5000\u00a0 of nonrefundable earnest money to extend the offer to purchase the property, if the court approves the plan. Dave Miller is authorized to negotiate this plan on behalf of the board).<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Dave\u00a0 said the we need to consider what we are going to do with this property over the winter if we acquire it?\u00a0 Do we put a tenant in it and could we find someone who will live in it and someone to manage it?\u00a0 Brad and Marylee said that would be ideal.
