{"id":2598,"date":"2014-07-30T06:43:30","date_gmt":"2014-07-30T14:43:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.fairbanksyouthadvocates.org\/board\/?p=2598"},"modified":"2014-08-12T19:39:05","modified_gmt":"2014-08-13T03:39:05","slug":"draft-board-minutes-7-1-14","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/fairbanksyouthadvocates.org\/board\/2014\/07\/30\/draft-board-minutes-7-1-14\/","title":{"rendered":"Board Minutes 7-1-14"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>FAIRBANKS YOUTH ADVOCATES<\/p>\n<p>BOARD MEETING<\/p>\n<p>July 1, 2014<\/p>\n<p>5:00-7:00<\/p>\n<p>Call to order: 5:00<\/p>\n<p>Present:\u00a0 Patrick Endres, Kathy Birch, Tami Manning, Sarah Finnell, Barbara Tyndall, Brad Johnston, Marylee Bates, Dave Miller<\/p>\n<p>Absent:\u00a0 Meryem Kugzruk<\/p>\n<p>Barbara Tyndall opened in prayer.<\/p>\n<p>Minutes postponed until members had an opportunity to read them.<\/p>\n<p>Board member reviewed long term and mid-term, short-term goals.\u00a0 Need to complete business plan for sustainability (priority 5)<\/p>\n<p>Treasurer\u2019s Report\u2014Brad Johnston reported we are under budget for equipment.\u00a0 Cash position is adequate to pay our bills.\u00a0 Need to rework budget.\u00a0 June 30 end of grant cycle.\u00a0 Discussion of\u00a0various budget items.\u00a0 Complete report is on-line.<\/p>\n<p>Discussion of recent donor development, property acquisition, and associated ramifications of a campus development:\u00a0 There is a possible endowment option.\u00a0 Marylee said she has a meeting Thursday morning to discuss possible acquisition of more property for FYA.\u00a0 The board discussed the possibility of a campus for FYA. \u00a0\u00a0Dave suggested that the old pink house be included in discussions around the real estate being discussed for acquisition.\u00a0 The board felt that the buildings on the property need to be replaced.\u00a0 Dave suggested we get someone to create a concept for a possible future campus so we can present the plan to future donors.\u00a0 Dave and Marylee will get together to discuss a person to do this.\u00a0 Patrick asked that they also give a tentative budget for such a project.<\/p>\n<p>Ed Report:\u00a0 Marylee reported The Door is housing five to six kids any given night.\u00a0 There were nine different kids this last week.\u00a0 The youngest was 13 and the oldest 18.\u00a0 Several are runaways.\u00a0 Staff has had contact with three sets of parents in the last week.\u00a0 These were good experiences.\u00a0 Twenty volunteers have finished with background checks.\u00a0 As of June 9, volunteers logged 272 hours.\u00a0 Two interns worked 132 and 144 hours respectively.\u00a0 The biggest need for volunteers at the moment is Saturday from 8-4 and both shifts on Sunday.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 AHFC ($218,000 grant) has contacted FYA indicating we have received some of those funds. \u00a0Emergency Solutions Grant for $21,000 has been received.<\/p>\n<p>A Saturday night barbeque from 6-9 has become a weekly event at The Door.\u00a0 It is attended regularly by around fifteen kids who are not shelter kids. Fundraisers have included the following: \u00a0Credit Union $13,000, West Valley raised $5000.\u00a0 They partnered with North Star Community Foundation for matching funds.\u00a0 Potentially $10,000.<\/p>\n<p>Co-op sent $1,200. Fairbanks Lutheran $1000.\u00a0 Walk for Charity earned $275.\u00a0\u00a0 Amazon Smile has potential for fundraising.\u00a0 Members can sign up for donations from sales to go to FYA.\u00a0\u00a0 We have two new donors.<\/p>\n<p>Public Health ladies came by The Door and will come every Thursday.\u00a0 Kids need to talk to Public Health for contraception.\u00a0 We don\u2019t pass out contraception.<\/p>\n<p>National School Lunch Program\u2014looking for reimbursement for some of the meals but this involves a lot of red tape.\u00a0 An application is in but not accepted yet\u2014have to attend a mandatory meeting in Anchorage in early August.\u00a0 They were able to get cheap tickets for staff to attend.\u00a0 She will stay with her sister.<\/p>\n<p>Shelter needs a storage shed.\u00a0 A connex box was discussed.<\/p>\n<p>Dave requested a story about one of the kids.\u00a0 Marylee told of a young man who has since aged out.\u00a0 He is 22 and doing very well.\u00a0 He is closely connected with his family and his daughter.\u00a0 He struggles with depression.\u00a0 He was brought to the church shelter by the Rescue Mission.\u00a0 He caught a vision and turned his life around.\u00a0 He got a job and began mentoring other kids to make good choices.\u00a0 He stayed a few months and maintained his job because was able to have a place to live.<\/p>\n<p>July 13<sup>th<\/sup>-19<sup>th<\/sup> Marylee will be on vacation.<\/p>\n<p>Vehicle has a stick shift and staff will not use it.\u00a0 Patrick moved we sell it for a reasonable, marketable price and buy something else.\u00a0 Marylee says Blue Book was very low on it.\u00a0 The motion was seconded by Kathy.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Dave says we can sell it in 24 hours on Craigs List.\u00a0 Dave Bates or Dave Miller will work on this .\u00a0 Unanimous approval.<\/p>\n<p>Patrick, Marylee, and Sarah will design the sign for The Door.<\/p>\n<p>Board members will complete thank you call to donors.<\/p>\n<p>Patrick completed summer newsletter.\u00a0 We\u2019re going seasonal.\u00a0 Business cards for youth with listed services have been passed out.\u00a0 One Homeless Night website it up and progressing.<\/p>\n<p>A golf tournament fundraiser by Golden Heart Rotary will take place August 2.\u00a0 Would be good for a board member to attend.<\/p>\n<p>Discussion over what sort of gifts to give our volunteers.\u00a0 Sarah is heading this up and Tami and Kathy are helping.\u00a0 There are about 20 volunteers to address.\u00a0 Marylee said that surveys were passed out to find out what would be appreciated.<\/p>\n<p>Marylee, Barb, Kathy, Sarah, and Meryem will be present at One Homeless Night.<\/p>\n<p>Next meeting:\u00a0 July 30, 5:00-7:00.<\/p>\n<p>Adjourned 6:59<\/p>\n<p>Respectfully Submitted<\/p>\n<p>Barbara Tyndall<\/p>\n<p>FYA Secretary<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>FAIRBANKS YOUTH ADVOCATES BOARD MEETING July 1, 2014 5:00-7:00 Call to order: 5:00 Present:\u00a0 Patrick Endres, Kathy Birch, Tami Manning, Sarah Finnell, Barbara Tyndall, Brad Johnston, Marylee Bates, Dave Miller Absent:\u00a0 Meryem Kugzruk Barbara Tyndall opened in prayer.
