Parenting a Teen
August 6, 2012What We’re Up To: Winter Alternatives
August 24, 2012We all tend to get busy in the summers – they’re short and lovely, here. We focus on our garden, our children’s sports, hiking and camping and fishing. Its a wonderful time to be in Alaska! But as we get busy, non-profits are still working day to day to meet the needs of Fairbanksans who seek help from them. At FYA, we know how important it is for all of us to be supported by the community, and each other.
If you’re looking for ways to help in Fairbanks, here are some ways you can:
Volunteer.
Non-profits and other worthy groups usually operate with barebones budgets and need able-bodied volunteers to fill the gaps. We realize you’ve got lots to do – particularly in these manic, bright days, but by giving your time to local organizations, you help them help others – and oftentimes have a lot of fun! Seek out organizations whose activities and mission appeal to you, and ask if they need volunteers – we’re sure they do!
Some organizations in the community who need volunteers include:
The Breast Cancer Detection Center
Creamer’s Field
Love Inc
Fairbanks Children’s Museum
Fairbanks Arts Association
Big Brothers/Big Sisters
Forget Me Not Books
Fairbanks Community Food Bank
Fairbanks Memorial Hospital
Fairbanks Rescue Mission
Food items.
Good, healthy meals are base needs that many of our community struggle to meet. By donating your excess food, you can help children, families, adults, and seniors meet their needs. Avoid waste and help others by donating your excess crops, game, or perishable/non-perishable food items.
These are some organizations in Fairbanks who frequently need food:
Fairbanks Rescue Mission
Fairbanks Community Food Bank
FCA’s Street Outreach and Advocacy Program
Stone Soup Cafe
Joel’s Place
Toiletries, clothing, diapers.
FCA’s Street Outreach and Advocacy Program
Interior Center for Non-Violent Living
Fairbanks Rescue Mission
Don’t forget to watch for the weekly Fairbanks News-Miner column; Friends in Need! Each week, local volunteer opportunities and non-profit needs are shared.
